Door FAQs

I love your work, but I don’t live in Colorado. Can you still make my door?

Yes. I do work all over the United States (and have also done doors for homes and buildings outside the US). Call me and we can discuss your needs and what is involved.

How long does it take you to make a door?

The general answer is 2-4 months. It depends on what is in the queue, how elaborate the door, and the location of project.

What kind of wood do you use?

Most of my doors are made with Mahogany. This is the most stable wood of all. Most durable. I have also used other hardwoods (cherry, walnut, teak)

How much does an Anne Shutan Door cost?

My doors range from $7500-$25,000. Cost determined by size and curviness, inlays, and location.

Do you have a payment plan?

My contract usually asks for 1/3 upfront, 1/3 during the process and 1/3 at completion. I have made many variations to this to make it easier for the client, however. Just ask.

How durable are the doors?

The wood is all kiln dried and ready for life in a home, church, temple, etc. Mahogany is incredibly durable, and elegant, to boot.

What kind of finish do you use?

We use a multi-step penetrating finish that starts inside the wood itself.  Then, a catalyzed polyurethane is applied offering optimal protection. This “air-craft” finish has been chosen for it’s outstanding qualities of durability while maintaining the depth and clarity of the wood itself. You can still feel the grain of the wood when petting.

How do we start?

First, get in touch with me. If you are in Colorado, I encourage you to come visit me and my studio. I make “to scale” models of my doors before I  make the full size door. You really get to see (in 3D) what your door will look like. I have many of these models in my home along with full size entrance doors to see. I also like taking folks on a Shutan door tour to see the finished doors in their beautiful homes. Once we decide on a design, I create a model for your final approval.
